It all started way
too early on Saturday the 27th November 2010, the trip was uneventful until
we stopped at the twin service stations, the designated meeting place
around 6.30am to find there was no-one in sight. A phone call to Ian
resulted in a disheveled barefoot man wandering into the café. He had
arrived a lot earlier and used this time to have a quick nap. By 7.30am
no-one else had arrived so we headed for Anna Bay. We arrived at Birubi
Beach Caravan Park only to find out that check-in wasn’t until after 2pm, so
off to the beach we went. A decision was made to make our way along the
beach to the wreck to set up for morning tea and to wait to see if any calls
came through from any others joining the trip.

Ian and Michael
parked our 4WD’s alongside each other so that Ian could tie off the shelter
to the bull bar of Michaels car. (This later resulted in Michael’s car
getting bogged.) Soon Terry arrived with his two dogs and was followed by
his sons Tim and Ben who live in Shoal Bay, they were tagalongs for the day.
They were an asset to the trip helping out Ian and Terry who both got bogged
in the sand dunes. Ian’s was by far the best, as it took a double snatch to
get him out.
It was back to the
caravan park for the evening. Ian soon had
his camper up and it was time for us to have drinks and nibbles and then think
about cooking dinner.

Day 2
Met up at the
entrance to the beach after breakfast,
Terry, Ian, Michael and Debra were off to the dunes for the day. First stop
after driving along the beach was for morning tea at the wreck. Next it was
off into the dunes with Terry leading the way and Ian taking the girls in
his car with him. We all had a go with the exception of the kids, and I
think I surprised a few with the dunes that I went up and down as I am a
novice. I was determined to get up the dune the first go as I'm really
hopeless at
reversing.

We had a great day
and even had a demo on how to change a fan belt after Ian’s car shredded his
into the fan as we stopped on the top of a dune to change over drivers. It
was great spotting by Arthur as it had only just happened. After this it was
back out onto the beach and back to the park for drinks and nibbles, then to
the local pub for dinner. We were all lucky enough to have the Monday off so
we made the most of the trip and stayed again that night.
Monday was home
day and we had friends to see in Medowie while the others went into Stockton
to the old wharf and the
harbour.
A great time had
by all, ready for the next.
